The Weekly Word: Confirm Your Calling

The weekly verse

“For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.”

‭‭2 Timothy‬ ‭1‬:‭9‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

the weekly question

What’s out of place in your picture?

Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”

Psalms 27:14 (NLT)

One of the beliefs we idolize the most is the idea of “making it happen”. You want something in life? It’s entirely up to you to make it happen. You find this same line of thinking when you look back at the Israelite people, whom God delivered from Egyptian slavery. The Israelites wanted to hear from God, which is a good thing. But they lost patience waiting for Moses to bring Word from God down from the mountain. So what did they do? They took matters into their own hands.

Because they so badly wanted a god, they melted a community’s worth of gold & forged a false god to worship. They thought they were making it happen, but in reality, they were making a mess. God had a beautiful picture in mind for the Israelite nation. A Promised Land, where He would enrich them beyond measure. The problem for this generation was, they didn’t have the patience to trust God to guide them there.

Our patience, or lack thereof, is also painting a picture for our life. What we prioritize is eventually going to show, and so will the things we take for granted. Ask God to give you eyes to see anything that doesn’t belong in His picture for you. Exercise discernment in identifying areas where you’re being forceful instead of faithful. Allow The Lord’s patience to propel you into the Promises you have in Christ Jesus. And “let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise” (Hebrews 10:23, NLT).

the weekly Consideration

With good reason, the Word of God is centered around the God of the Word. Grace and peace are only found in Jesus, the One who is, who was, and is still to come (Revelation 1:4).

“Teacher, which commandment is the greatest in the Law?” Jesus declared, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.

And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Matthew 22:36-40 (BSB)

the weekly challenge

Confirm Your Calling

When Jesus told His disciples they would do “greater things” than Himself, He told them it was because He was going to the Father (John 14:12). In that moment, the disciples couldn’t understand how Jesus leaving them could possibly be a good thing. But now we know why.

Jesus going to the Father meant the Spirit of Truth would come.

When His Spirit came to indwell His disciples, the Church of Christ was born. Through each new believer, God’s power has only continued to flow. And for those who are willing to submit to His Lordship, His power continues to grow.

“Therefore, believers, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you [be sure that your behavior reflects and confirms your relationship with God]; for by doing these things [actively developing these virtues], you will never stumble [in your spiritual growth and will live a life that leads others away from sin]; for in this way entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly provided to you.”

2 Peter 1:10-11 (AMP)

The baton of Jesus’ “greater works” has been passed to us. It’s imperative we take our relationship with the Holy Spirit seriously & take inventory of our lot in life. We have to respect the grace of talent God has given to us in this season, and to steward it well. Jesus has laid the finished foundation (John 19:30), and now we have the privilege of partnering with Him. The Holy Spirit has given you His affirmation—

Let your life be the confirmation.
