The Weekly Word: Reconciled to God

The weekly verse

“But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Therefore, since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from wrath through Him! For if, when we were enemies of God, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His life!”

‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭(BSB‬‬)

the weekly question(S)

“In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Matthew 3:1-2 (NLT)

“From then on Jesus began to preach, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.”

Matthew 4:17 (NLT)

From John to Jesus & the prophets that came before them, the constancy of God’s message of repentance has remained. The Lord hates wickedness, and how it destroys those who remain on that perilous path. This is why the call to “turn back to Him” continues to go out.

“And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.

So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.”

2 Corinthians 5:18-21 (NLT)

If The Kingdom was considered “near” during Jesus’ time, how much more at-hand is it today? Now is the time to turn from sin & receive salvation. Now is the time to turn to Jesus & find New Life in Him. Now’s the time to take the baton of reconciliation & reveal the righteous grace of God.

“Do you think that I like to see wicked people die? says the Sovereign Lord. Of course not! I want them to turn from their wicked ways and live. Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. For why should you die, O people of Israel? I don’t want you to die, says the Sovereign Lord. Turn back and live!”

Ezekiel 18:23, 31-32 (NLT)

the weekly Consideration

“Once Jesus was in a certain place praying. As he finished, one of his disciples came to him and said, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Jesus said, “This is how you should pray:

“Father, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. Give us each day the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation.”

Luke 11:1-4 (NLT)

Even though “The Lord’s Prayer” is commonly known, the truth is, there’s nothing common about it. Jesus’ prayer leads us into a radical reorientation from the world by placing our focus on The Father.

In doing so, we look to God as the Provider of our provision & ask that His Will be exalted above our own. This also brings an understanding of our need for His forgiveness as we seek to mirror His mercy in our relationships with others.

And as we turn away from the grip of evil, and turn toward the grace of God, we’re boldly asking for The Lord’s Kingdom to come & reign in & through our lives. We’re asking for the Holy Spirit to humble us, and ultimately, to conform us to the image of Jesus Christ.

the weekly challenge

Humble your heart

“…if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7:14 (BSB)

This powerful revelation of restoration was given to King Solomon, “the wisest of all men” (1 Kings 4:31). And even today, God’s Spirit of Wisdom enables us to recognize His desire to move on behalf of those who make way for Him.

As followers of Jesus, we have a responsibility to repent from that which is wrong & look to The Lord to make things right. Whether we’re grieved by circumstances in our lives or the lives of others, we’re to engage with God in prayer & seek His face.

And while we know that Jesus is the initiator, sustainer, and finisher of our faith, it’s important for us to do our part. We need to continue to petition The Lord & come before Him with a humbled heart.
