The Weekly Word: Reveal His Heart

The weekly verse

“This message was kept secret for centuries and generations past, but now it has been revealed to God’s people...And this is the secret: Christ lives in you. This gives you assurance of sharing his glory.

So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭26‬-‭28‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

the weekly question

Are you living with intentionality?

“And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Hebrews 10:24-25 (BSB)

The word used for “spur” comes from the Greek word, paroxysmos. This word is only used one other time in the New Testament, and in that context, it’s used to depict a very “sharp” disagreement between a group of believers. So when we talk about spurring one another toward love & good deeds, the last thing that should come to mind is a picture of coddling & comfortability. Truthfully, it often takes some measure of irritation & incitement for us to take action in the faith we know to be right & true.

Remember, “the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword” (Hebrews 4:12), and cuts through ALL things that oppose God’s will for our life. Which is why it’s worth asking, when is the last time God’s Word made that deep of an impact on your life? Does your church preach the Word with such a purity that it pierces you regularly? Do you have any Godly relationships that shake you free of spiritual stagnancy & the status-quo? These things aren’t a list to check off, but things to consider as it relates to our overall intentionality in pursuing Christ.

The reality is, The Day is coming in which Jesus returns, and it matters as to whether or not we’re ready. This shouldn’t bring a sense of dread or condemnation for Believers. However, we should find ourselves provoked with a Spirit-inspired sense of sobriety & correction. Jesus stepped away from the glory of His Kingdom so that He could seek & save the lost. It’s imperative we set aside our own interests, and seek the One who paid the ultimate cost.

“Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

Jesus (Revelation 22:12-13, NLT)

the weekly Consideration

“For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 14:17 (NLT)

When we hear about a life of goodness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit, it’s really easy to breeze over that or have a negative connotation based on much of what we see in the church today. A lot of people experience “Country-Club Christianity”—where everything looks good on the outside (like a veneer), but inside it’s hollow.

This is the result of an absence of the Holy Spirit, which is why it’s important to allow the Spirit to re-calibrate our thinking when we hear truth like this from Scripture. The reality is that goodness, peace, and joy make up an authentic spiritual atmosphere—all of which is inhabited by the power & presence of the Holy Spirit.

the weekly challenge

Reveal His heart

James 1:17 tells us that “every good & perfect gift comes down to us from the Lord of Lights & there is no shadow or variation in His flawless character”. In Jesus, we see the reality of this Scripture revealed. We see that Jesus walked with uncompromising wisdom, and there was purpose packed into the words He spoke & the steps He took. At every turn, He revealed the redemptive-heart of the Father through tangible expressions of God’s Love & Power. And by His grace, these expressions have continued to flow through His faithful followers today.

In Jesus’ example of the lamp (Matthew Ch. 5), we find an illustration of our opportunity to continue to carry His Presence. He shows us that when we empty ourselves in humility before Him, we invite the Spirit of God to light the lamp of our heart. And from here, Jesus elevates us to a place in which we bring Revelation-Light to any given house (Matthew 5:15). Whether it’s your own household, or any other place in which you find people, God wants to use you to reveal Himself.

The Spirit of the Lord wants to multiply His Presence through Christ-centered communities of people (“a city on a hill”), so He can bring all nations to His transformative Light. If you recognize a burning desire in your heart for more of the Lord, take a moment to ask God to humbly use you. As He answers your honest prayer, respond in obedience to fulfill your part, and watch as God uses you to reveal His heart.
