The Weekly Word: Examine His Grace

The weekly verse

the weekly question

What purpose is your pain serving?

If there’s one common experience among people, it’s pain. In one form or another, we all experience pain. But God’s Word tells us that not all pain is created equal. 2 Corinthians 7:10 (BSB) says:

“Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.”

The word sorrow can also be translated as “pain or grief”. Godly pain is “good grief” & is intended to bring about life-giving change. It holds a redemptive purpose, which is what we find in Jesus’ story of the “Lost Son”.

In this story, the Lost Son is rebellious & desires only to please himself. He claims his part of the family’s inheritance & leaves home early to “live it up”. He eventually blows all the money & finds himself miserable, broke, and starving in the middle of a pig-pen. At this point:

“…he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired servant.”

The Lost Son repented; he “changed his mind”. His arrogance was replaced with humility as he sought the forgiveness of his father. Unbelievably, we see the father go above & beyond extending forgiveness. We see a father “filled with love and compassion run to his son” and welcome him home with open arms. He lavishly clothes the son with many things, including “the finest robe in the house”. The father even throws a great feast to celebrate his son’s return. And at the end of the day, we clearly see how this pain served a purpose.

The question is, what purpose is the pain in your own life serving? Is it pushing you further away from Jesus, or is it provoking meaningful change? Make no mistake, your Heavenly Father has a heart filled with love & compassion for you. He has no desire to see you spiritually starve, but instead, He is actively looking for you to return home. God is ready to embrace you with open arms & to comfort you when you come to Him. Our God is a Loving Father who wants to restore you.

the weekly challenge

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15

Before passing away at the age of 110, Joshua left us with one of the most well-known and recited verses of the Bible. It’s a powerful declaration of allegiance to God that every sincere Believer is called to make. And while this verse certainly stands on its own, it’s the context in which it’s delivered that makes it even more meaningful.

After leading his generation of God’s people, Joshua calls the entire assembly together in order to deliver a farewell address. It’s in this address that God speaks through Joshua & provides a detailed account of everything He’s done for them up to this point. We see how God delivered them from bondage, turned curses into blessings, and brought them continual prosperity. All of which culminates with God declaring:

“I gave you a land for which you did not labor, and cities which you did not build, and you live in them; you eat from vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.”

Joshua 24:13 (AMP)

For God’s people, this was more than a simple history lesson. This was a powerful realization that, everything they had, came as a result of His undeserved kindness. And above all, it was an invitation to respond to His Grace. The reality of today is—

God Is Calling Us To Examine His Grace In Our Own Life.

God is calling us to take a moment & consider that every material blessing, every ounce of good health, every spiritual gift, and every good person in our life—all of this & more has come from His hand. And because we live under the New Covenant, purchased by the blood of Jesus, we have an even greater invitation of grace to respond to. 1 Peter 2:5 (TPT) says:

“come and be his “living stones” who are continually being assembled into a sanctuary for God...”

The God of all creation is building a home for His Presence to dwell, and we’re invited to be a part of this heavenly habitat. The question is, “how will we respond?”. Will we see our blessings as simply “our own” & go the way of the world? Will we forget His faithfulness? Or like Joshua, will we make a declaration to be different?

God’s Spirit of Grace has given you the opportunity of an eternal lifetime. You can choose today to be a part of the heavenly home God is filling with His Glory. Like Joshua, you can boldly draw your line in the sand & declare, no matter what the rest of the world does—

“As For Me & My House, We Will Serve The Lord.”
